Vowel Harmony as Agreement by Correspondence
نویسنده
چکیده
Initially, it was believed that blocking effects1 simply could not be modeled with Agreement by Correspondence (ABC) (Hansson 2001; Rose & Walker 2004). Hansson, in particular, lays out this assumption very clearly: “Intervening segments do not themselves enter into the agreement relation holding between the trigger-target pair, and therefore they must be irrelevant to that relation: they cannot be opaque” (237, his emphasis). The model’s assumed inability to account for opaque segments was seen as a positive with respect to accounting for consonant harmony2 because blocking effects are extremely rare in consonant harmony systems3. However, since opaque segments are common in vowel harmony systems, it was unclear how applicable ABC would be to vowel harmony. In spite of this, Rose & Walker are optimistic about the possibility of analyzing at least some vowel harmony systems as ABC:

Vowel Harmony in Korean and Morpheme Correspondence1
The two most controversial aspects of vowel harmony in Korean ideophones are its morphologically restricted nature and the harmonic feature governing these alternations. Not only is the harmony pattern restricted to the ideophone class2, but also the value of the harmonic feature determines the meaning of the ideophone itself. While alternations from one feature to another involve relative lowe...
متن کاملSurface Correspondence and Discrete Harmony Triggers
In this paper, I examine formal properties of surface correspondence and their empirical predictions for languages with partially overlapping harmony patterns. Surface correspondence was introduced as a basis for enforcing feature agreement and disagreement among segments in an output (Walker 2000a). Originating studies focused on consonant harmony, for which surface correspondence offered insi...
متن کاملVowel harmony, directionality and morpheme structure constraints in Warlpiri
This paper examines theoretical analyses of vowel harmony in the light of data from Warlpiri, a language of Central Australia. Modern analyses account for vowel harmony in terms of a constraint requiring feature agreement within a particular domain (e.g. Backovic, 2000; Lombardi, 1996). These analyses predict that exclusively suffixing languages should exhibit only rightwards harmonies. They al...
متن کاملYucatec Maya Vowel Alternations – Harmony as Syntagmatic Identity
In this paper, I will give a detailed account of vowel harmony, disharmony, dissimilation, and elision in Yucatec Maya. These phenomena provide insights for the treatment of assimilation in Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993). The theoretical topics to be dealt with are (i) an adequate formalisation of phonological feature assimilation within Correspondence Theory (McCarthy & Prince 199...
متن کاملUnstable surface correspondence as the source of local conspiracies
In this paper, we address parallelisms between local and long-distance effects in segmental phonology, focusing on the similarity conditions that trigger them. We take the view that both local and long-distance harmony and disharmony are consequences of segmental correspondence—namely, unstable surface correspondence—as modeled in Agreement by Correspondence theory (henceforth ABC; e.g., Walker...
